Mio amato Frank… Niente di diverso da quanto ho sempre pensato io stessa dal momento in cui “l’ho conosciuto”. Lui è Frank Lloyd Wright, Lei è Mamah Borthwick Cheney.

Visti dalla prospettiva attuale: 

Lui è uno dei padri del Movimento Moderno, maestro dell’architettura che fa di uomo, architettura e natura un tutt’uno organico, icona americana e famoso in tutto il mondo; 

Lei è la donna intellettuale e colta che, non senza rinunce, sceglie di vivere un amore capace di guidarla verso la realizzazione personale, nel contesto sociale dei primi del ‘900 durante il quale alle donne difficilmente venivano concesse altre vesti oltre quelle di mogli e madri. 

Visti dalla prospettiva a loro contemporanea: 

Lui è un architetto in ascesa, ma non ancora ai livelli di fama che conosciamo oggi. Senza dubbio ben conosciuto presso Oak Park (Illinois – USA), ove risiede con la moglie ed i sei figli, sta sperimentando con successo lo stile delle case della prateria ed iniziando a viaggiare per il mondo, in Italia, Germania, Giappone. Al suo fianco però Frank vuole Mamah e per loro sogna il lieto fine nel rifugio da lui progettato a Taliesin (Winsconsin – USA) lontano da occhi indiscreti, ma purtroppo non sarà affatto così; 

Lei - e suo marito - così come tanti nel quartiere, gli commissionano il progetto della loro abitazione nel 1903, ed è così che si conobbero. Spenta e silenziosa, Mamah si lascia travolgere da un amore totalizzante, una passione che la accende e la fa rinascere, riscoprendosi intellettuale e femminista. Allo stesso tempo, questo amore così grande la lacera anche profondamente perché non è mai libero dal senso di colpa per aver abbandonato i due figli.

Mio amato Frank (Loving Frank) è il romanzo di Nancy Horan che ricostruisce questa storia d’amore, realmente avvenuta tra il 1907 ed il 1914. Una relazione adultera e scandalosa, ma al contempo meravigliosamente intensa ed il cui epilogo, vero anch’esso, parrebbe quasi essere una spietata punizione del destino.

From our current perspective: 

He is one of founder of the Modern Movement, father of the Organic Architecture that promotes harmony between human habitation and the natural world through design approaches, American icon, worldwide known; She is the intellectual and cultured woman who chooses the love over her family, who also finds in this love the reason to pursuing her ambitions, in the context of first ‘900s when women were hardly given other roles but wives and mothers. 

From their current perspective: 

He is a rising architect, not yet such famous the way we know today. Besides he was surely well known at Oak Park (Illinois – USA) where he settled down with his wife and six children and he started performing the style of the prairie houses, then travelling around the world, in Italy, Germany, Japan. By his side Frank wants Mamah, who he designed the refuge of Taliesin (Winsconsin – USA) for, dreaming of a happy ending and hoping to escape prying eyes. Unfortunately it will be the set of a tragedy instead; She and her husband gives him the job to design their house in 1903, just like the most of Oak Park residents at that time, and this is how they first met. Silent and sadly quite, she ends up falling in a overwhelming love that gives her a new life, makes her carve out her career and support feminism. This huge passion yet splits her heart with the sense of guilty for acting like an unnatural mother who had left her young children behind.

Loving Frank is a novel by Nancy Horan that depicts this love story, truly happened between 1907 and 1914. A scandal relationship, but yet so passionate and heartfelt, which seems to be cursed by destiny into its tragic end.
